Video: Australia and France's epic set

France middle blocker Kevin Le Roux tries to beat the Australian defence

Tokyo, Japan, June 1, 2016 – France’s match with Australia at the Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament on Wednesday may have ended in victory for the FIVB Volleyball World League champions, but the Volleyroos can hold their heads high for taking them to the absolute limit in a marathon fourth set which ended in a joint record set score 44-42. (Brazil & Canada also hold the record of 44-42 in the 1999 World League).

France and Australia both put on a tremendous spectacle in what is one of the highest scoring sets in volleyball history.

France captain Benjamin Toniutti, an experienced athlete who has played professionally since 2009 was astonished at what unfolded.

“It was an amazing deuce situation in the fourth set,” he said. “That was the first time in my life to see that.”
